L.A.’s Whisky a Go Go celebrates its 60th anniversary in mid-January, with the Strawberry Alarm Clock helping the nightclub ring in its seventh decade.
The Jan. 13 show will be the L.A. band’s ninth appearance in over a dozen years at the historic Sunset Strip rock venue, headquarters for the psychedelic scene of the 1960s and still going strong.
Other classic 1960s acts participating in the 60th-year concert series include Doors guitarist Robby Krieger, Love with Johnny Echols, Canned Heat and the Chocolate Watchband. All of the acts are still going strong and include some original members.
Here is the lineup for the Whisky a Go Go birthday bash:
The Chocolate Watchband, Thursday, Jan. 11. Today’s group is led by original singer David Aguilar.
Canned Heat and Blues Image, Friday, Jan. 12. Original drummer “Fito” de la Parra hasn’t forgotten to boogie.
The Strawberry Alarm Clock, Saturday, Jan. 13. They’ll be playing selected songs from their upcoming studio album, along with their 1960s classics.
Love with Johnny Echols, Sunday, Jan. 14. Original guitarist Echols performs with members of Baby Lemonade, all of whom worked with founder Arthur Lee.
Robbie Krieger, Tuesday, Jan. 16. The Doors were briefly the house band at the Whisky. Krieger’s most recent solo album is “The Ritual Begins at Sundown.”

The Whisky opened on Jan. 16, 1964, with a performance by Johnny Rivers. The singer-songwriter put the Whisky on the national map with a series of “go go” albums billed as recorded at the club.
The exhaustive list of rock luminaries who played the Whisky include the Byrds, the Mothers of Invention, Led Zeppelin, Buffalo Springfield, the Stooges, Elton John, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac, Guns N’ Roses and Metallica.
SAC bassist George Bunnell says the band “feeds off” the enthusiasm of the new generations of psych fans at the venue: “They weren’t around for the summer of love, but they really want to feel that experience.”
The SAC show’s psychedelic vibe will be enhanced, as always, by Robert Jacobs’ Midnight Sun Lightshow.
The Strawberry Alarm Clock are bassist Bunnell, keyboardist Mark Weitz, drummer Randy Seol, guitarist Howie Anderson, percussionist Gene Gunnels and multi-instrumentalist Steve Bartek.
